How to make a watermelon fruit bowl

Easy-to-assemble, smaller version of a watermelon basket.  Ideal for the 4th of july or other small family gatherings.  Welcome newcomers to the neighborhood.  Gift families of newborns.

For a 4th of July picnic, a covered dish supper or a gift for a new neighbor, prepare a  colorful watermelon fruit bowl.  This dish is a healthy, tasty treat that will be pleasing to everyone.

This how-to guide lays out simple step by step directions for assembling a watermelon fruit bowl.

Instructions
Step 1

Buy a watermelon, its size depending on the number of people to be fed.  For a fruit bowl, a small, round, seedless watermelon will be adequate. Purchase an assortment of fruits, such as cantaloupe, strawberries, blueberries,  kiwi, citrus fruit, grapes, cherries, mango, kumquats, starfruit, pineapple, or bananas.

Step 2

Wash and dry the watermelon. With a sharp knife, cut a thin slice from one side; be careful to cut only into the watermelon rind and not into the red flesh. Place the watermelon with that flat spot down so it will sit steady.  On the opposite side, cut away a slice 1” to 1-1/4” thick. This cut will go into the red flesh of the watermelon.  On this second side, use a large spoon to scoop out the “meat” of the watermelon. This is a juicy task and may be more neatly done in a kitchen sink.

Step 3

Cut the red watermelon meat into smaller chunks and place them in a large bowl along with any juices.

Step 4

Wash and dry the fruit. Choose your fruits according to your preferences or to suit the occasion.  A 4th of July theme might include red watermelon, blueberries and white banana chunks.  Peel fruits as needed.  Cut larger fruits into smaller pieces.  Add these fruits to the watermelon chunks along with about a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and stir gently.

Step 5

Spoon the mixed fruit into the empty watermelon.  Wipe the outside of the watermelon with a damp paper towel, then dry the outside.

Step 6

If the watermelon fruit bowl is to be transported and no refrigeration will be available, line a box with newspaper and a large plastic bag. Place the watermelon in the box and place ice around the insides of the box to keep the fruit cool and crisp. Tie up the plastic bag to cover the watermelon.

Tips & Warnings
Be careful when working with knives
A small knife or other clean, sharp tool can be used to carve a design around the cut edge of the watermelon.
Frozen fruits may be used, but fresh will have a firmer texture.
If bananas are being used, add them as a last minute item and stir well so they, too, are coated with lemon juice.
Any excess fruit can be placed in a lidded container and refrigerated. Save it to refill the watermelon fruit bowl.
For larger crowds, use a larger, oval shaped watermelon.
